Michigan Environmental Council Commends Governor Snyder for Vetoing Bad Ballast Water Bill

“Michigan Environmental Council applauds Governor Snyder’s decision to veto HB 5095 which would have weakened Michigan’s ballast water regulation and increased the risk of new invasive species being brought into Michigan’s waters,” said MEC Policy Director James Clift.

"The governor’s leadership in this critical area has been steadfast throughout his two terms in office and contributed to the decision by the federal government to require active, effective treatment of ballast water.  HB 5095 would have created a loophole around Michigan’s current law, which requires vessels to add ‘active treatment’ technologies approved by Michigan or the federal government that protect the Great Lakes from invasive species, and was clearly a step backwards," added Clift.

“We thank the Governor for standing strong and using his veto to protect our magnificent Great Lakes and waterways,” said MEC President Chris Kolb
