Michigan Distilled - Kalamazoo - Get the Lead Out!
The Flint Water crisis put a spotlight on the dangers of childhood lead exposure. Yet two years later, the threat is still pervasive across the state and in the Kalamazoo area.
In fact, Michigan ranks as the 5th worst state for lead poisoning. More than 1 million homes likely contain lead paint. Dozens of water systems continue to use lead pipes.
But relief may be coming. Last year, for instance, the state adopted rules that reduce allowable amounts of lead in drinking water. Record dollars were allocated to remove lead in homes. Meanwhile, Michigan Environmental Council has proposed several new public health policies.
Please join MEC Health Policy Director Tina Reynolds and Julie Fox from Kalamazoo County Lead Poisoning Prevention Program to talk about what’s being done locally and in Lansing to fight lead exposure—and what more should be done.
