Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun. MDHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel. MDHHS Legislative Director Emily Schwarzkopf.
These three women are paramount in the fight to not only end COVID-19 but all of Michigan's public health threats. That includes a common, toxic substance putting our infant's and children's lives at risk in all corners of Michigan: lead.
Nearly 70% of Michigan homes were built before lead paint was banned, and many likely have the substance still in them. When ingested by children, lead can stunt mental development, cause behavioral issues and lead to illnesses like osteoporosis. Ingesting lead when young can lead to a lifetime of struggle.
But we can end lead poisoning, and the policies that can do so are sensical and seemingly simple.
Learn how Khaldun, Hertel and Schwarzkopf advocate for better lead rules on behalf of their most vulnerable constituents with tenacity, compassion and policy solutions.
Join them, MEC health director Tina Reynolds and MEC President & CEO Conan Smith at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday to hear how we can end lead poisoning for good during MEC's Lead Education Day keynote address.
