As a journalist who reported on environmental issues in Michigan for 22 years, MEC's Communications Director, Hugh McDiarmid, Jr., is sensitive to the needs of other journalists. He can field questions from reporters or direct them to the most appropriate expert on our staff or within MEC’s coalition of environmental and public health organizations in Michigan.

The Michigan Environmental Council (MEC) provides a collective voice for the environment at the local, state and federal levels. Working with our 70+ member groups and their collective membership of more than 200,000 residents, MEC is addressing the primary assaults on Michigan’s environment; promoting alternatives to urban blight and suburban sprawl; advocating for a sustainable environment and economy; protecting Michigan’s water legacy; promoting cleaner energy; and working to diminish environmental impacts on children’s health.

MEC produces several publications:

Michigan Environmental Report, or MER, is MEC’s quarterly newsletter. It is distributed to all of MEC’s donors and members, as well as other interested parties. Printed in full color, this 24-page publication features reports on what’s happening in Michigan’s environment, how state officials are dealing with those issues, and how MEC is poised to help.

MEC's Annual Report details the organization's work and progress on all of its issue areas: energy, water, health, growth, law, education and history. Download MEC's last two annual reports here.

Michigan Environmental Briefing Book is a biannual publication that lists the most urgent public health and natural resource problems facing Michigan. Produced for the public, lawmakers, and reporters, this publication shares causes, real solutions, and issue experts. Download the 2007-2008 briefing book here.

Capitol Updates are released weekly when the legislature is in session by MEC’s Policy Director.
