Michigan Distilled, the Michigan Environmental Council blog, went live this morning with an introductory column at www.MichiganDistilled.org.

“We hope Michigan Distilled becomes a regular resource for policy makers, journalists, allies and Michiganders everywhere who are looking for lively discussion and analysis of issues and happenings affecting Michigan’s natural resources,” said Chris Kolb, MEC president. “It’s a less formal but no less important way for us to highlight the best of our work and to connect readers with other news, resources and allies across Michigan.”

The format will be freewheeling, with a flexible schedule of updates and topics. Weekly policy blogs will start Wednesday with thoughts on a potential new severance tax on mineral extraction written by MEC’s Director of Conservation and Emerging Issues Brad Garmon.

Content will range from the technical and wonkish to whimsical and irreverent, said Kolb. MEC policy experts will be regular contributors, but much of the content will include sharing links and news of interest with readers.

“We want to take advantage of the great analyses, articles and conversations going on across the state in traditional media, social media, and among our member groups and other allies,” said Kolb. “We have smart people on staff whose ideas are worth sharing. But we also want to amplify the good stuff others are doing.”

Michigan Distilled adds to the organization’s communications outreach, which includes both printed and electronic newsletters; the weekly Capitol Update legislative roundup; members-only internal analyses; and a growing presence on Facebook and Twitter, along with relationships with traditional, niche and new media news outlets.
