Environmental group praises outgoing DNRE Director Rebecca Humphries

She helped smooth tough transition
Nov 1, 2010
Rebecca Humphries, who today announced her resignation as director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, was praised by the Michigan Environmental Council (MEC) as a capable and fair leader who helped steady the agency during a time of administrative upheaval and budget crises.

“Director Humphries has been a reliable and steadfast voice for conservation and environmental protection,” said MEC President Chris Kolb. “She was a pragmatic leader who never let politics or paperwork get in the way of her commitment to Michigan’s people and their natural resources.”

Humphries was director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources at the time it was merged with the Department of Environmental Quality early this year. The transition to a merged agency, never an easy task, was substantially smoother because of Humphries’ blend of administrative experience and resource protection know-how.

“We wish her the best,” Kolb said. “And we hope that Michigan’s next governor can choose a new director whose commitment to Michigan’s waters, land, air and people matches Becky’s.”
