Our Mission
Conserve and restore the world’s largest freshwater resource using policy, education, and local efforts ensuring a healthy Great Lakes and clean water for all generations.

The Alliance for the Great Lakes has been a champion of the Great Lakes, the world’s largest fresh water resource, for more than 35 years. Comprising a team of professionals and volunteers, the Alliance promotes clean, healthy waters throughout the region for the benefit of generations of people and wildlife.

Each year thousands of volunteers participate in the Alliance’s ever-expanding Adopt-a-Beach program to remove trash and debris from our beaches and shorelines. During 2007 alone, volunteers removed 28,996 pounds of litter. Volunteers also collect information on water quality and pollution sources at their adopted beach locations, information that is used to craft solutions aimed at curbing pollution and improving overall beach health.

Recognizing our work doesn’t end with this generation of lake advocates, the Alliance developed an award-winning Great Lakes in My World curriculum that is now widely used by hundreds of educators in the region – helping to inspire future Great Lakes stewards. The Alliance staff is similarly forward-thinking when it comes to keeping abreast of major issues facing the Great Lakes and works on all levels to encourage good Great Lakes policy related to water conservation, invasive species and water quality.
